The Kingdom of Bandjoun ( in Homalah : 'Goung a Djo' or simply La'djo meaning "The land of people who buy" ) is a former state located in the current West Region of Cameroon . It was founded in the 16th century by Prince Notchweghom, then exiled with his court following his ouster from the royal succession of Leng . Under the reign of the dynasty of the heirs of Notchwegom, Bandjoun established itself as one of the major powers of the Grassland .
From its foundation until the reign of Fotso the conqueror, the kingdom engaged in an imperialist policy where many neighboring states were subjugated and annexed.
This project of hegemony over the Noun Valley was suddenly interrupted with the arrival of the Europeans at the end of the 19th century . Radically opposed to the attempt at Christianization of the Grassfields by Protestant and then Catholic missionaries , Bandjoun became the main target of the colonizing powers.
Upon the death of Foh Fotso II , a coup d'état supported by the French army ousted the designated successor Bopda and installed his half-brother Kamga Joseph Manewa, baptized and loyal to the colonial empire , on the throne. Following this political upheaval, Bandjoun engaged with the Ahidjo regime and France against the UPC insurgents .
In the aftermath of the Cameroon War , the country, no longer recognized as such because it was attached to the newly independent Cameroon, experienced a social revolution and decadence during which Christianity developed to the detriment of ancient traditions, leading to a gradual disappearance of ancestral knowledge.
