
The city of Maroua is the capital of the Far North region of Cameroon and the Diamaré department . The Maroua Urban Community established in 2008 is made up of three arrondissement 1 communes with an urban population estimated at more than 300,000 inhabitants in 2022. Some sources dispute this figure and estimate instead that its population would reach one million (1,070,000). Regional capital, commercial and craft center, university city, it is one of the most populated and most important in Cameroon . Maroua is historically a tourist city. It has many hotels.

The city is located on national road 1 ( N'gaoundéré - Kousseri axis ) 1,312 km north of the capital Yaoundé at the confluence of the Mayo Kaliao and Mayo Tsanaga rivers in the Lake Chad watershed .
Climate
The climate is tropical, dry and hot, almost semi-desert. The average annual temperature is 28.3 °C . The average annual precipitation reaches 794 mm 2 .
The city is crisscrossed by large avenues lined with trees which provide a bit of freshness.
History
The city was occupied by the Guiziga in the 17th century and the Mofu in the 18th century 3 . The Peuls settled there later.

The city takes its name from that of the Marwa community (pronounced Marva in Guiziga), the first commune established in the locality upon the arrival of the German settlers. The pronunciation was Frenchified into Maroua upon the departure of the Germans and the arrival of the French settlers .
Mokolo is a city in Cameroon located in the Far North region , near the border with Nigeria , at the foot of the Mandara Mountains . It is almost entirely inhabited by the Mafa. It is the capital of the Mayo-Tsanaga department . It is also the name of one of the main markets in the city of Yaoundé in Cameroon , of a district in the city of Bertoua (East Cameroon), of another district in the city of Maroua (Far North Cameroon). It is said that there is a district in the city of Kaélé (Far North Cameroon) which also bears the name Mokolo. The natives of Mokolo (Mountain) for the most part Mafa have always had in mind to keep the name of their city of origin when they settle elsewhere. This explains this proliferation of the name Mokolo.

Yagoua is a commune in Cameroon located in the Far North region , near the border with Chad ( Bongor ). It is the capital of the Mayo-Danay department .

During the colonial era, it was called Kusseri within the German protectorate of Kamerun , then Fort-Foureau within the territory under mandate of French Cameroon .
It is an important market, particularly for trade with neighboring Chad .
